HAZELWOOD HERITAGE
by Cheryl, Grade 6
Mattawa McElligott District Public School
In 1888, Herbert Edward Hazelwood moved to Montreal from England. There he married Agnes Rosamond McClelland in 1892. In 1898, they moved to Mattawa because they noticed advertisements in the newspaper advertising free land in Ontario. They lived on Lot 13, Concession 7 in Papineau Township.
When Agnes and Herbert lived in Sarnac Lake, Herbert worked as a policeman on the streets and Agnes worked for the Family Herald newspaper writing names and addresses on the papers that were to be mailed. She was chosen because of her good handwriting. While living in Montreal Agnes also worked for the son of Donald Alexander Smith, known as Lord Strathcona. (Donald Smith was the man who drove the Golden Spike in the railway in B.C.) When they moved to Mattawa, Herbert had to go to Montreal to work because they had very little money. Agnes stayed home. In the summer she picked wild berries and in twenty pound lard pails carried them to Mattawa (7 miles) to sell. There are still some Hazelwoods living in Mattawa. They are: Clayton Hazelwood (my dad), Kathleen Hazelwood Moore, Ellen Hazelwood Bryanton, Bernice Hazelwood Watts, Myrtle King Hazelwood, Don and Marjorie Richards Hazelwood and Ruth Hazelwood Byers. That equals up to eight Hazelwoods still left in Mattawa. In my dad's family there are six kids and two adults. The kids are: Clara, Gaylord, Ellen, Kathleen, Herb, Hugh, Clayton, and Mahlon. Their parents are Charles and Imelda Hazelwood. Most of my dad's brothers and sisters live in Ontario except for Hugh and Mahlon. Hugh lives in Vancouver, B.C. and Mahlon lives in Seattle, Washington. Other Hazelwoods or relations live in Yukon, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, P.E.I., Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Connecticut and in their graves.Throughout the years the Hazelwoods have done many exciting things as one big family. The latest ones have been a Hazelwood reunion and the Hazelwood Cookbook in 1996. Most of the Hazelwoods came to the reunion. It wa s a 2 or 3 day reunion and it took place at Richard Reid's cabin in Papineau. There were games such as young kids soccer, adult soccer, hay rides, tug of war, football, water fights, and a bus tour of the Hazelwood Homestead. As for the cookbook, everyone who was a Hazelwood or related to a Hazelwood contributed some of their favourite recipes. The title of the cookbook is "Hazelwood Hearty Helpings." Many people enjoy this book. Out of all of the Hazelwoods, 392 noted in the cookbook, I know 202 of them. There are some I haven't met but would like to or would have liked to, people like Herbert and Agnes Hazelwood, Lana Mcgregor, Heather and Don Webster, Joel Dowd, Bill McClelland, Kyla and Heidi Clark, Amber and Jade Nice, Pauline and Jeffery Neuman, my brother Leslie Hazelwood and Myrtle King. Some people I know I can't exactly remember. I think the farthest back I can remember is to my grandpa. I wish I could remember farther back but I can't.My house is 100 years old. My dad was born in my house. His parents lived in my house before us. My dad bought it from them.We added on some of the mud room. The upstairs rooms were a kind of neon green. My bedroom was divided into 3 rooms. The laundry was the parlour, the livingroom was the livingroom, the corner of the livingroom was the kitchen and the kitchen was the summer kitchen. The office was a bedroom and there wasn't a bathroom upstairs. When it was all finished everything was in the right place. Our house is in good shape for 100 years old. We are a family of love ! We enjoy being together and always will!
