HOW IT WAS
when it FLOODED

Hello, my name is Darryl. I am ten years old
and I go to Mattawa McElligott Elementary
School. I am in grade 5 and my teacher is
Mr. Jackson. I live in Mattawa; I have lived
in Mattawa for ten years, and I still do.
Where I live I have lots of friends to play with.

Mattawa is peaceful because mostly everybody
is kind and there is not a lot of noise.

This picture is of the 1960 flood.

The Post Office has steps up to the door.

The water was so high it went inside the post
office. It also went onto the stairs across the
road. Stores at the bottom of the street were
closed but were open at the top. The rural
mailman had to make other arrangements to
get the mail so he could deliver it.

It was in late May I think that many of our
streets were under water. Some of these streets
were named Mattawan, Timmins, and Ottawa,
and any other streets that are at the same level.
There was water all the way to where Turcotte's
chip stand is. Cars could not be used. Cars
tried to get through the water, but, they couldn't.
Some people used canoes to get to places.
They canoed from the chip stand to the bridge.
The buses could not bring the students across
the bridge so they had no school.
