In-School Activities

MATTAWA YOUNG AUTHORS

"An extracurricular activity where talents grow
and share the products of imagination..."
Publishing poems and stories on the Internet involves
more than the inspiration that gives words wings.

In our club, it includes understanding how HTML coding works
and being able to set up their text for uploading. It includes
decisions about colours and fonts, and technical facts.
Not all progress at the same rate. We have Grade 3 kids
who take to it naturally, and others in Grade 6 who need help.
It is gratifying to see their increasing independence.

But it is even more than that.

We have really great kids, the serious writers
who faithfully come to use the school computers in the lab,
either to build keyboarding skills when inspiration lags,
or to compose onscreen with confidence.

ABOUT TALENT

In every school there are young writers who have
that special "something" that sets them apart.
We have them in Mattawa too, kids whose words
flow freely and delight their readers with what
they find. Humour tickles out from their poetry,
or high excitement grabs the unwary in a story,
but mostly it is just pleasant reading.

Our writers range from grade 3 to 12, with the
whole group's Webclub meeting every Tuesday to 5pm.
Supervised computer time at noon has been set aside
during the week for those who type at school.hui

(Update 2000-02: Still as above, but the 30+ kids in Webclub are in grades 3 to 8.
Webclub meets on Thurdays until 4 pm. --TGibson)
