Pioneer LUMBERING
by Nadine, Grade 5

Hello, I'm Nadine and I am 10 years old.
I'm in grade five and I attend Mattawa McElligott
Elementary School. I live in Lauder Township,
about 45 minutes away from Mattawa. I really like
where I live because it's very peaceful and barely
any cars go by. My dad has been living here
almost all his life and I've been here ever since
I was one year old.

Our property used to be owned by Booth Lumber.
They used to own horses which used to pull logs
out of the bush and the horses were kept in
stables. They used horses instead of trucks.
After the horses took out all of the cut logs,
the horses took them to the Amable du Fond
(river.)

It was called a log drive that was 18 kilometers
long. The logs ended up in Eau Claire at the
sawmill.
The people in Eau Claire might not have got all
of the logs because of all the rocks that got
in the way. Gravelle Chutes is what the workers
at Booth Lumber used to call Amable Du Fond
a long time ago.

There was a Native trail where the Natives and
Voyageurs used to go through Lake Manitou and
ended up in Lauder Township. They used to trade
lots and lots of furs such as beaver, muskrat,
They probably also used to buy food too.

This is a picture of the river that goes through our property.

This picture is near my house behind my Uncle
Fern's house. I think that the rapids are
beautiful, and the scene is wonderful.
It's a lot of fun if you go down the river with
a tube, but watch out for leeches, logs and rocks.

A lot of animals go there too. There are bears,
beavers, moose, deer and so on.
How great it is to live here.
