OUR SCHOOL
THE SCHOOL, its PEOPLE, and the PINES
Beside the school a magnificent White Pine stood.
It had lived for close to 250 years, spared by pioneers
who cut all that were straight. This one branched too soon in three,
of little value then, as timber. Now it towered above all
the youngsters, pines now beginning their second century.
In the opinion of a Forester, (B.Sc.F) it would have lived
in good health another fifty to a hundred years, or more.
There was not the slightest hint of decay or disease
in the more than four foot diameter of its stump when,
on May 5, for $1200, a crew came and cut it down.
Why? Parental fear that it might fall on the children?
As I understand it,
the insurance company wanted "the danger" removed,
unaware that deciduous trees are downed by storms,
but in more than 60 years, never have I seen a pine.
