TIMBER TRAIN
AS IT WAS BEFORE THEY GOT THEIR NEW RAILWAY CARS
The stories were written by students, photos by T.Gibson

We have a lot to share, and many photos taken
while riding the Train or on tour through Temiscaming.

TIMBER TRAIN

We want to share our
thoughts as we rode the train.

Marshall loves the scenery,
especially the sights of the
Ottawa River as the train
follows its course.
The high trestle at Beauchene
has no railings, but a great view.

Melanie tells what it really
was like to have her first train
ride. She looks down 100 feet
(30 m) at the Beauchene rapids
below the trestle and
experiences what it is
to go to another province.

Rachelle and Hillary include
the Tembec Mill among
their impressions of the trip.

Jennifer feels the historic significance
of it all, and how lucky we are
to live where we have
such a rich heritage.
She too, mentions Quebec.

Fraser and Matthew liked to
look at the Otto Holden
Hydro dam from the top,
as well as at the Mont Antoine
Ski Hill behind it.

Stacey feels that no one
should miss such a trip!

Below, you can very faintly see the far shore.

For a long way the train track
clings to the side of a steep cliff
above the Ottawa River,
passing through rock-cuts.

Marshall loves the scenery,
especially
the sights of the Ottawa River
as the train follows its course.
The high trestle at Beauchene
has no railings, for a great view,
but best on a sunny day.

In the photo, a truck is about
to cross the small bridge.
Here is Marshall's story:

THE TIMBER TRAIN RIDE
by Marshall
The Timber Train was so awesome
I would do anything to go on it again.
We saw some nice forest
and few Bald Eagles.
It was beautiful scenery.
There was a couple of bridges.
One was really high off the ground.
It was so fun going over the bridge.
The sight from the train of the
Ottawa River was breath taking.

From Quebec, we see uninhabited Ontario and the Ottawa River

TEMBEC MILL
by Rachelle and Hillary

Last fall many people had the opportunity to
discover and enjoy the great nature and all the
things it has to offer from Mattawa to
Temiscaming. They did this while travelling on
the Timbertrain. Our school had the chance to
enjoy the scenery as well.

While on the train we saw many different things
like Snake -Creek, two old bridges, animals
and the Tembec Mill.

When we got off the train we travelled across a
big bridge and went to a souvenir shop;
afterwards we went to a field and played soccer
until it was time to go back to the train and
that was our trip on the Timbertrain.

Rachelle and Hillary include
the Tembec Mill
among their impressions of the trip.

This is what we see as we get off the train,
having passed huge piles of sawdust
waiting to be used. Tembec conducts tours
of the mill for all from the Timber Train
who wish it, rather than taking the bus tour
of the town of Temiskaming. Both are
very interesting for this is no ordinary town.

The town of Temiscaming is built on a steep hill.
Everyone has a good view!

Timber Train Trip

The Timber Train was a great learning
experience. It taught us facts about our Canadian
Heritage and was fun at the same time. We learnt
interesting facts about the wilderness and
historical marks left by our ancestors. We visited
a place where most of us have never been before,
Quebec.
The Timber Train was such a fun excursion
that we would love to go on it again. We think
that being part of history is a great honor and
that a lot of people don't undestand what a great
historical site we have. More people should take
the time to take this excursion. Not just to sit
back and relax but to actually listen to the
information they are giving us.

Mont Antoine Ski hill in summer,
seen from the Quebec side of the Otto Holden Hydro Dam

(Note re Mont Antoine 2000-01, the ski hill has been closed and sorely missed
by all the kids who had downhill ski instruction there.)

Fraser and Matthew liked to look at
the Otto Holden Hydro dam
from the top, as well as at
the Mont Antoine Ski Hill behind it.

On the timbertrain last year we had a
great experience riding.
The wilderness was very good
It was a fun day to go on that day.
We played cards, soccer, and went to the
souvenir shop.
It took 2 hours. We looked off the bridge.
On the way back we saw the dam,
the ski hill, and a bald eagle.
The girl on the train talking said that
the natives used mercury to keep them warm.
The mercury caused brain damage.

written by Fraser B. and Matthew D.

Through raindrops on the train window, we see down at a level
more than 100 feet below the top of the dam,
Holden Lake, where the Ottawa River continues toward Ottawa.

Stacey and Melanie feel that no one
should miss such a trip!

THE TIMBER TRAIN

The thing I liked the most were the animals.
I was amazed not only with the information I heard
but of how fun it was to learn it!
Ontario has never looked as good as it did on
the Timbertrain trek. I liked the souvenir shop
and I love the wooden train whistles the most
because they commemorate the Timbertrain.
I strongly urge that everyone take a ride
on the Timbertrain and become part of history!
