The boatlift at Mattawa, Ontario, shows the way we go over dams and around hazardous white water. Our rather battered pontoon boat gets little respect among the yachts at marinas, but it is comfortable.
Except for the small rivers feeding it, and Lake Temiskaming itself, the waterway is a series of man-made lakes contained by dams along the length of the Ottawa River. Much of it is on a major fault line, with spectacular cliffs and waterfalls.

OUR SUMMER WORLD: Intro
All our friends know that when the pontoon boat is gone from our dock, we could be gone for a week or two anywhere on the river between Notre Dame du Nord on the northern tip of Lake Temiskaming, to Chat's Falls east of Arnprior. It is a beautiful stretch of waterway, over 400 miles, which can only be properly enjoyed at slower speeds. Because our boat draws about a foot (40 cm) of water, we can explore places that faster boats have not even noticed. Narrow little rivers that stop us eventually at waterfalls or ponds are our favourite places, where we pole our way over sandbars and obstacles. Going carefully behind islands that the charts warn us about, or through bogs that open into unseen places, undisturbed and "inaccessible," we leave as quietly as we came. There is magic in their peace. As a gift to friends who have asked me to attach photos, and to others whose boats are more suited for speed than for finding beauty beyond hazards, are these memories given. May you enjoy your own leisurely trips through this collection as it grows! Thus begins OUR SUMMER WORLD
Presqu'ile Bay where we often anchor for the night is mostly safe from winds. The camping and swimming are excellent here. Below you will find the webpages which can be separately accessed, making download-times less tedious. The table of contents is also a plan. North to south (1.0 - 6.21) West to east (6.22 - 12.2) Dates will be added as content is uploaded.
TABLE OF CONTENTS OF WATERWAY CAMERA Eventually if we all live so long, more than 300 photos will fill the list at the end. Little by little they will appear online, and as they are done, the links will appear immediately below this statement. Click and go there. The next version of ithe CD will include all new material. (Historical, by now; the photos were all taken before 1997)5.1 Otto Holden Dam-------
For now, that's all there is. Later, the live ones will all be blue and underlined. Until then, treat it as the sequential plan. -----------NORTH END OF THE WATERWAY----------
