A Life Well Lived

John Argo Shows How
Squared Timbers Were Made

First, a
series of
notches,
all equally
deep, are
chopped
with an
axe about

a foot apart. They show how much wood
to remove on that side. Here, outrigger
stakes are nailed on to stabilize the log.

Click picture to see. One by one, sections between notches
are broken away with a heavy axe, and then a broadaxe keeps
the edge level. Finally the surface is smoothed with an adze.
Click the final image to see the thin shaving taken by the adze.
With one side done, the log has to be rotated 90 degrees.

A canthook is needed to lever
the log into position, with pieces
of wood to wedge it in place.
That done, the notches every
foot or so apart begin the steps
again until it is another smooth
surface, finished.
. Repeat two more times to have all four sides squared.

 Accurate
corners of
buildings
must have
dovetails to
 fit exactly.

Shaped with a swedesaw, it takes careful work all the way!

When the public school took part in the Canada-wide CHIJ project
the result was like a time-capsule of the school year 1997-98.
The year 2000 was an important year historically. What was going on in
Mattawa at the time? Take a look at
Recent History and see if
we can follow through with as wide a range of "things" in it !
